Blomé (43) suggests that the first element may be the OE  *spæc , 'brushwood,' assumed by Ekwall for Speke (La), PN La 110. Hence, 'cot(e) by the brushwood.' Wallenberg (StudNP 2, 89) suggests the pers. name Spec (h ) found in DB (Beds). In that case we should, however, have expected some sign of genitival s .
