Probably 'hazel spring,' v. hæsel , wielle . Hals - in Devon names may go back to OE  heals , 'neck,' cf. Halsinger supra 33, or be a dialectal form of OE  hæsl . Topographical considerations must largely determine one's choice of element in any particular name. v. Addenda lviii.
