Etymology

It is difficult to be sure about this name but as Goodameavy seems to contain the name of its sometime owner or holder, so also Hoo Meavy may contain ME  Hewe , Hue , Hughe , 'Hugh.' Cf. Adam Hugha found in Hartland Hundred in 1333 (SR ). It may be noted that there were four manors of Mewi in DB but none of them was held by either a Goda or a Hugh , so that both names, if not of pre-Conquest origin, must derive from some unrecorded 12th cent, holders.
