Etymology

The first element is probably the ME representative of the OE  pers. name Goda and the name would mean 'Goda 's settlement by the Meavy.' Cf. Babcary (So), Babakari DB, Babbekari 1242 Ass, from the OE  pers. name Babba and the river- name Carey , and Uffculme infra 537.
