Canna

Early-attested site in the Parish of Manaton

Historical Forms

  • Canna or Cann East 1771 Recov
  • atte Canne 1374 SR

Etymology

This would seem to be the OE  canne , 'can, cup,' used in some topographical sense, but the name is very difficult. There is a Cann House in Tamerton (v. 243supra ), Cann Wood in Plympton, five Canna Parks and one Canny Park in Devon and it is frequent in field-names. Cf. also the pers. name atte Canne 1333SR (W).
