Etymology

Probably 'Pætti 's hollow,' with the strong form of the pers. name P (e )at (t )a found in pattandene (BCS 1307), Patney (W), Peat (t )anige (BCS 1118) and Patton (Sa), peattingtun (BCS 587) and early sound-substitution of ch for ts , cf. Patsford infra 52.One might suggest 'Pæcci 's hollow,' cf. Patchill infra 211, but we have no parallel for 11th cent. substitution of ts for ch . v. holh .
