Etymology

The parallel of OE  bryda beorh (KCD 1292) in Oxfordshire suggests that we may have here a compound of OE  brȳd , 'bride, woman,' either in the genitive singular (brȳde ) or plural (brȳda ) and wic . As with the 'maiden' names (cf. Maidenford supra 26), it is impossible now to suggest the exact circumstances under which such a name might be given.
