Etymology

Chittlehampton lies in a hollow which may well have been called cietel, i.e. 'kettle.' Cf. Hellkettles (Y). The whole name was presumably cietel -hǣma -tūn , 'farm of the dwellers in the hollow,' v. hæme , tun .
