Etymology

Maugerhay (6″), Mackehay 1573 ParReg, Makerhay 1588 ib, Magger (s )hey 1593 Hall iii, 1611, 1615 ParReg, Maggahaye Common 1651 Hall iii. Probably 'Malger's, Mauger's enclosure', v. (ge)hæg, as suggested by Professor Bruce Dickins. This pers.n. is ultimately from OE  Mæðelgār and appears as the first element of Maugersbury Gl, Maggra Park (PN NRY 166), Meagre (PN BedHu 264–5) and Madjeston (PN Do 7).
