Etymology

Herdings, Heytridding c. 1300 Hall iii (p), Heytredding c. 1300 ib, Heyridding c. 1300 ib, Heighridynges 1330Ass , Heyriddings 1367 Hall iii, Herdyngfeld 1407 ib, Heardynges 1560 ParReg, Heardinges 1589Dep , Herdinges 1633 DbA vi. This is a difficult name in view of the variation of forms. Heighridynges clearly points to 'high clearings', v. hēah 1 , rydding , which would suit well the eminence on which the farm is situated. Forms in –t - however, present some difficulty but may point to an original hēhðu 'height, high place'.
