Etymology

Sewelldale (lost), Seuewelled ', Seuewelledale c. 1160, Hy 2, c. 1191BelCh , Sevewelladala Hy 2 ib, Seuen (e )welledale 1162–80, 1280 Darley, Sewelledale John, c. 1240BelCh , cf. Seuenwalles , Seuenwelles c. 1300 CPG. The valley was named from an important physical feature in or near it, 'seven springs', v. seofon , wælla , cf. Seawell Fm and Sywell (PN Nth 40 and 139–40), Sewell (PN BedHu 129). No doubt one should translate the name as 'the valley near Sewell', v. dæl 1 .An alternative and later name for the same valley may have been
