Burton Bole (6″), Burton Boole 1319 (16th) DbA xxix, Burton Bole 1736 ib. Bole is the Db lead-mining dial. term for a place where ore was smelted before the invention of furnaces; it usually denoted a round cavity on the top of a high hill, v. LMGloss 15 and Kirkham 3.There are numerous examples of the use of this word in the p.ns. of the county, usually compounded with hyll.
