Hames Hall

Early-attested site in the Parish of Papcastle

Historical Forms

  • Le Hames in Papecastre 1315 Ipm
  • del Hames 1308 Netherhall
  • del Hames 1330 StB 1332 SR
  • del Hames 1367 Ipm

Etymology

We have also several references to the family of Adam del Hames (1308Netherhall ), Thomas del Hames (1330 StB, 1332 SR) and John del Hames (1367 Ipm) which probably came from here. Cf. also Haimeshill 1626 PR (Bridekirk), Hemesehill 1660 CantW viii. This can hardly be other than the northern plural of OE  hām.
