Etymology

The first element is presumably the Welsh  pen , possibly here, as in Penrith infra 229, 'head, chief.' Ekwall (ScandCelts 113) suggested for the second element a diminutive of Welsh  rhyd , 'ford,' corresponding to OBreton  (Ty ) Ritoch , Redoc , but later in DEPN he left it unexplained. Little weight can be laid on the first d in the 1276 Cl form, which is found only in a personal name.
