The first element would seem to be ME hulfere , 'holly,' carrying that word back some 200 years. ON hulfr , 'dogwood,' must be its cognate rather than its source. Cf. unidentified Hulverhirst c. 1200Laner , Hullerhirst 1285 For (v. hyrst) and Huluerbosk 1292Ass (p).
