Historical Forms

  • Sneelinges 1578 Cocker
  • Sniling 1717 CWxv
  • Snelings 1719 ib
  • Snillings 1774 Donald

Cf. Snelehow whynnys p. 1500 StB. The forms are late, but suggest that the first element may be OE  snegel , 'snail.' The second is probably ON  eng, 'meadow.'
