Etymology

The derivation of this name is uncertain. For eng . v. eng . Professor Ekwall suggests that we have here ME  carald , 'cask', recorded in Patience, v. 159, from ON  *karald (cf. ON kerald ), Swed. dial. karale , though it is difficult to say why the place should have been so named—unless the Devil's Beef Tub (Dumf) be a parallel.
