Etymology
Cf. Haukeland c. 1345Carliol , in this parish. The first element is either ON haukr, or OE hafoc, 'hawk,' perhaps used as a personal name.It is on the whole most probable that the original name was Hafoces dæl and that Hauks dalr , which is represented in most of the medieval forms, is due to Norse influence. v. dæl , dalr .
