In this name the Old Anglian wald , 'forest' (v. weald ), has been added to an Old Irish compound of cnocc , 'hillock, spike,' or in some cases 'cairn,' and dinn or dind , 'hill,' the word which lies behind Dent in Cleator infra 358 and Dent (WRY).
