Historical Forms

  • Pikes of Cardinogh, Cardinoughpike 1603 Gilsland

Etymology

The first element is the British caer , 'fort, camp.' The forms are too late for any certain interpretation of the second element, but they are at least consistent with derivation from the British personal name recorded in Bede, Hist. Eccl. ii, 2, as Dinoot (PrimW  Dǖnǭd from Latin Dōnātus ).
