Etymology

so named in 1766 (Leath) and is almost certainly to be identified with Thystelweit 1241 Pipe, Thistelthwayth 1254 ib., Thistiltuhat 1272For , Thistelthueyt 1285 ib., Thistelthwayt 1340 Pat, Thistelthwait 1381 IpmR, Thistlethwaitevulg. nuncupatur Thistlewhate 1589LRMB , Thistlethwaite 1722Devonshire ('thistly clearing,' v. þveit ). The medieval Thistelthwait was in this area and is repeatedly associated with Kirkethwaite . Just by Thistlewood, Curthwaite Beck (supra 10), which takes its name from a lost Kirkethwaite , enters Roe Beck. The 'vulgar' [θislʍət] doubtless was soon corrupted to [θislwəd].There is an exact parallel in Storwood (PN ERY 236) from 12th- century Storthwayte .
