Etymology

Ekwall (DEPN) suggests that this is a compound of þveit and a personal name corresponding to OSw  Afaster . v. Field Head Gutter supra 14.

From c. 1503 the manor-house of Austhwaite has been known as Dalegarth (Dale garthe c. 1503 StBA) 'garth in the valley'. v. dalr , garðr .
