Etymology

'Field where an assembly meets', v. þing-vǫllr. This would be the meeting-place of the Thing for the Scandinavian community in Wirral, cf. Raby 228supra . There is another Thingwall, near Liverpool, on the opposite side of R. Mersey, which would represent the centre for a Norse community in south-west Lancashire, v. La 112.
