Etymology

'Hamlet at a steep promontory', from wīc and a hill-name OE  Scēot -hōh from scēot 3 'a steep slope', and hōh 'a promontory, a spur', cf. DEPN, and Studies2 147. The affix Church - ('with a church', v. cirice ) distinguishes this township from Woodbank and Shotwick Park 208, 210infra .
