Etymology

'The rough, uncultivated, part of Shotwick', later, 'the hillside, the wooded hillside', v. rūh , banke , wudu , cf. Shotwick 206supra , Shotwick Park 210infra , from which the affix Rough - distinguishes this township. The Woodbank was originally the name of a place in Rough Shotwick . It is first mentioned in a grant of 'two selions upon le bonk in Rough Shotwick '13JRC 1792. Later contexts are 'the field of le Wodebong 'e14AddCh 66255, 'the township of Wodebank '1335 (15) Mont , 'seven acres of land upon our park of Shotwick , called Wodebank '1399JRC 1309, 'two messuages and eighty acres of land in Rough Shotwick called the Woddebanke '1512 ChRR.Some of these suggest that Woodbank and Shotwick Park 210infra were originally together as Rough Shotwick .
