Etymology

'Land added to an estate', v. ēcels . Some spellings show the second syllable interpreted as hyll 'a hill', or wella 'a well'. If Agnes de Nechel H3 Orm2 iii622n. belongs here, the form derives from atten (OE  æt þǣm ) 'at the-'.
