Etymology

Court Ho (109–345842), The Court Ho 1842 OS, Court Hall 1831 Bry, the manour called Bromborowe Corte 1539–47 Dugd, Bromborough Court (lit. Cromborough Court ) 1583 Orm2 ii521, Brambrowe Courte , Brumbrough Courte 1610 Sheaf, Brumborowe or Brombroughe Courte 1615 Orm2, cf. Cart Lane (le Courteway 1412) infra , 'the court-house', v. court .This is the moated site of the manor house of the abbots of St Werburgh, Chester, the capital of their manors of Bromborough and Eastham, cf. 239supra . It is described in 1819 as 'occupying an extremely strong position at the neck of land, accessible only from the south, to the east it is defended by the estuary, on the other sides by precipitous banks descending to an inlet which forms a channel between this parish and Bebington' Orm2 ii428. There was an earthwork about this site enclosing nine acres which could well be the burh from which Bromborough supra is named.
