Etymology

'Wood or clearing of the people of Māda ,' v. inga , lēah . Mēda is not on record, but is possibly a nickname derived from OE  mād , 'foolish,' as suggested in DEPN s. n . Cf. Madeley (St), Madanlieg 975 BCS 1312 and Madeley (Sa), DBMadelie .
