Etymology

'Place, site,' v. stōw . Wid , Wythe possibly from Wido de Auco or Guido de Stowe who held land in Stowe in 1130 and 1189 respectively (Rams ii, 261, iii, 48). “Called soe (i.e. Long ) in respecte of ye length and to distinguishe from other townes of ye name in this country” (c. 1640Layer ).
