Etymology

v. stōw , here probably used in the sense of 'meeting-place,' cf. Northstow Hundred infra 176. One would suppose that the hundred was named from Long Stowe infra 163. At the opposite end of the hundred, however, and apparently just over the border, in the field of Harlton called Northfeld , was another Long (e )stowe 1349Queens ', 1393Trinity . This was near Bourn Brook. In Harlton too, and near Eversden, was Stowefurlonge 1332Queens '. Near by was S (c )hortestowe 1349 ib., 1373Trinity , 1506–10StCatharine 's .
