Etymology

Ekwall (DEPN) has suggested that this is probably “the open country of the Hæselingas ” the dwellers at a lost Haseley . Such assumption of one lost place to explain another is dangerous and it is more probable that Hæselingas is to be interpreted 'people of Hæsel (a ),' a personal name corresponding to OGer  Hasili (a derivative of Hasu ) (FörstemannPN 787). This is more probable than any association with a lost OE  hæseling , 'hazel-thicket' (cf. Hazeldean PN Sx 263, Heslington PN ERY 273–4), as persistent medial e in the early forms makes it clear that this name goes back to OE  Hæselingafeld rather than Hæselingfeld . For Naselingfeude cf. Nelmes (PN Ess 114) and v. æt .
