Etymology

This is apparently 'the farm of Herel ,' the strong form of Herela found in Harlton supra 76. v. tūn . Ekwall (DEPN) suggests that Heorulfestun 1015 ASWills may belong here and some slight support may possibly be found in the 1272 form Harleweston . If this is so, the name is 'Heoruwulf 's farm,' v. tūn . This form may, however, belong to Harleston (Nf, Sf), both DB Heroluestuna , cf. also Harlestone (PN Nth 83), DB Herolvestune and Hardmead (PN Bk 36). Typpetote and Wygorn from the family of Sir Robert Typetot who held a manor here in 1298 (Ass ), and whose descendants later became earls of Worcester , cf. John Comitis Wygorn ' Lord Typtott (1448Ct ). For immo cf. s. n. Grantchester supra 76.
