Etymology

OE  scīenan -lēage (dat.), 'bright clearing,' v. sciene , leah , cf. Shenley, Herts. At one stage there was a tendency to develop epenthetic d. Shenley Church End stands on higher ground and was hence called Over Shenley. It was also known as Magna Shenley. Shenley Brook End is alternatively distinguished as Nether or Parva or Ma (u )nsell , the association with the Mansell family going back to the 13th cent. (Fees 461).
