Etymology

The first form, which stands unconfirmed, is probably corrupt, and the OE  form was probably Peotes -hōhe (dat.), 'Peot's spur of land,' in which Peot may possibly be a shortened form of a compound-name in Peoht - such as Peohthelm or Peohthun . The form Piot is on record in OE in the 8th cent.
