Etymology

Professors Ekwall and Zachrisson agree in suggesting that the first element here is the OE adj. æcen, an alternative and more regular form of acen . The suffix is eg and the whole name probably denotes an island grown over with oaks. The dat. form æcnan ege would have unpalatalised c . The o -forms would then have to be explained as due to an alternative form of the name with the adj. ācen , ME  oken , or as due to late and conscious etymologising by those who suspected that the name had something to do with ME  oke , 'oak'
