Early-attested site in the Parish of Oakley

Historical Forms

  • Morlesmede 1298 VCHii.132

Etymology

This identification is pretty certain and if it is right the name in the medieval form is probably to be explained as 'Moorley's meadow,' i.e. the meadow land belonging to Moorley (v. mor , leah ). The ground is well watered.
