Etymology

OE  Totan-heale , v. healh . The first element is a personal name Tota , v. Redin 70. There are two 8th cent. examples of this name, of which a still earlier example occurs in Tooting (Sr). With loss of intervocalic t , the same name has produced Toynton (L). The vowel has undergone late unrounding.v. Introd. xxiii.
