Etymology

Ballan -hæg or -hege , 'Balla's enclosure or hedge,' v. (ge)hæg, hege . The site would seem to forbid our taking the suffix to be the more usual eg , ieg even in its widest interpretation and the meaning given agrees well with its description as a 'park' in 1281. *Balla would seem to be a pet-form of a name in Beald -, v. IPN 172–3. Cf. Ballinger infra .
