Etymology

OE  Ēsingtun , 'farm of Esa or Ese .' For Ēsa and Ēse , v. Redin 75. v. ingtun . At one stage there seems to have been a tendency to shorten the e in the trisyllable but this did not maintain itself. The position of Easington led to frequent alteration of its suffix to don , as if from dun . Easington (O, Y) is an identical name.
