Etymology

Irish Hill, 1761 Rocque, Eridge Hille , Erige Hille , Eridgehill 1547LRMB , Arish Hill 1817 OS, Irish Hill Copse, Erige Coppes , Eridge Copice , Eridge Woode 1547LRMB , possibly 'ridge by the river', v. ēa , hrycg ; the hill overlooks the R. Kennet. This may be the unidentified Ebrige of DB, v. VCH i, 365. Ebrige was an estate of 1 hide in Kintbury Hundred; it had a mill and meadowland and woodland, and the account of it follows that of Hampstead Marshall, both manors being held by Hugolin the steersman. If the identification be correct, the DB form is corrupt.
