Etymology

Coombe Fm (Little Coombe Fm on 1″), Combe Farm 1761 Rocque, 1830 OS. Rog. de la Cumbe is mentioned 1245–6FF in connection with land in Farnborough. Cf. Coombe Fm in Brightwalton (Pt 1238), named from the same valley. Both are Combe Farm 1830 OS.Abingdon ii, 134–5, recounts a dispute t. Hy I between the Abbey and the king's chamberlain about services due to the Abbot for Leckhampstead and some land in Farnborough. The land in Farnborough is described as one hide and a piece of land called Kingescumbe , Kingescumba . It seems likely that this last is Coombe Fm in Farnborough, perhaps called Kinges - because held for a time by a royal official.
