Bassdown Copse

Early-attested site in the Parish of Chaddleworth

Historical Forms

  • copis of the Manor of Chaddleworth called Bassetts Downe 1550 LRMB

Etymology

Bassdown Copse, copis of the Manor of Chaddleworth called Bassetts Downe 1550LRMB . One of the two manors in Chaddleworth was held t. Hy 1 by Ralph Basset , who granted it to Abingdon. His grandson tried to recover the lands, but was compelled to confirm the monks in their possession of the manor, reserving only the right of obtaining wood from it for his manor of Letcombe Bassett. The timber was to be taken de bosco autem quod prædictæ terræ adjacet (Abingdon 11, 190), and it is probable that Bassdown Copse is the wood in question.
