Etymology
'Cilta 's farm,' v. ingtun . This name is not on independent record in OE but may be inferred from Chilcombe (Ha), Chiltancumb in BCS 620, Chilcombe (Do), DBCiltecome , Childerditch (C), DBCiltendis , and from Cheltenham (Gl), Ciltanham , Celtanhom in BCS 309 (i -forms are much more common than e -forms in this last name). This etymology can of course only hold good if we believe that the name of the Chilt R. is a back-formation, v. supra 4.Both of the forms of Chiltington in OE charters are in ME copies. It would seem to be only in quite modern times that the distinctive West has been added, in contrast to the somewhat distant Chiltington in the Rape of Lewes.
