Etymology
v. stræt . The traditional Roman road through Ardingly does not connect with Streat, as stated by Lower (i. 2). Mr Allcroft has however traced a Roman road over Plumpton Plain as far as the foot of the Downs at Middleton. It ran thence along the west side of the grounds of Middleton House direct north to Streat.
