Etymology

This name and Rusthall (K), Rusteuuellæ in BCS 260, a ME copy of an OE charter, point, as suggested by Ritter (108), to an OE  pers. name Rusta , which was probably originally a nickname from rust , 'rust.' A strong form of this name is found in Rushall (W), DBRusteselle , 1160 P Rusteshala . Cf. also rustingden in Kent (BCS 459). There is an OGer  name Rusto which seems to be of the same origin (Förstemann PN 1286).
