Etymology

Ekwall (DEPN s.n.) is probably right in arguing that the persistent single -l - suggests that this is 'the fortified place of the Stælingas' from the gen.pl. Stælinga , of the group-name Stælingas , and burh 'a fortified place'. However, the problem is in suggesting the etymology of the group-name itself, and no definitive answer can be found, so that Stælingas must be left unexplained at the moment.
