Etymology

Three of the early spellings with medial -es - suggest that the first el. is the OE  pers.n. Norðmann , well-evidenced in DB, Feilitzen 331–32, but all the rest indicate that the name is from the gen.pl. and means 'the farmstead, village of the Northmen or Norwegians', v. Norðmann , , as suggested by Ekwall, DEPN s.n. and Fellows-Jensen, SSNEM 60–61. The latter points out that the name indicates an isolated settlement of Norwegians. The same name occurs three times in LWR. Normanby is described as near Claxby, Caistor, on the Hill and on the Wolds, v. wald .
