Etymology

DLPN 43 takes the etymology of Faldingworth to be probably 'the enclosure of the Faldingas' (OE  *Faldingaworð ), v. -ingas , worð , and goes on to take the base of the group-name *Faldingas to be an unrecorded OE  pers.n. *Falda , the *Faldingas then being 'the family, the dependants of Falda'. Unfortunately, the pers.n. *Falda is not on record and there do not appear to be any Continental cognates. It may be better to return to Ekwall's explanation (DEPN 173a) of the name as 'WORþ for folding animals' or to follow a suggestion of CDEPN (223b) that we are concerned with OE  *falding 'a folding place' < fald 'a fold for animals' + ing 2 , locative-dative sing. *faldinge + worð , the sense being 'the enclosure called or at the falding , the folding place'.
