Etymology

, 1824 O , 1830 Gre , the Nesse 1604Cragg , cf. the Nesse end 1678, 1709, 1710Dudd ; the Ness ( v. næss , nes 2 ) is situated on the north - east coast of the parish , nearly two miles north of East Halton Skitter and East Halton Beck , the continuation of Skitter Beck ( in Ulceby parish ) , so unless the Beck has radically altered its course , and note the name Skitter Ness is unrecorded before the 19th century and earlier seems to have been simply called The Ness , it can hardly have been named directly from Skitter Beck , and presumably was a name transferred from the Skitter for some reason , now apparently obscure .
