Etymology
, cf. “ junction at Eaglescliffe lately called Preston Junction ” , VCH III 222 . The original was a junction on the Stockton to Darlington railway ( 1825 ) where a spur led off to Egglescliffe , later extended to Northallerton ; before the opening of the Leeds Northern Railway viaduct ( 1852 ) there used to be from the ' Yarm depot ' at Egglescliffe “ a great trade in coal to packmen , who carried it in bags on donkeys , mules and horses into Cleveland . As many as a hundred animals would be waiting their turn for loads at one time ” , ib III 223 .
